Malnutrition, a growing concern in the UK. Jul 2010
Malnutrition can result in decreased resistance to disease, growth faltering in children and poor wound healing. If left untreated, illness, mental and physical disability and even death can occur.
In Britain, three million or more individuals currently suffer from under-nutrition and it is estimated that a further two million are at risk through illness or frailty.
We work together with the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (BAPEN) to raise awareness of the incidence of malnutrition and the problems it can cause.
Screening for malnutrition
It is essential to be able to asses nutrient status of a patient through nutritional screening. This is a vital step in identifying those who are malnourished or who are at risk of becoming malnourished. BAPEN has developed a screening tool (the MUST tool) which is an effective way of identifying those at risk of malnutrition. Further information on the 'MUST' Tool can be found here :
